26 New Scholarship Holders from the Mozambique LNG Depart to France

Another 26 students awarded with higher education scholarships in France, granted by the Mozambique LNG Project, operated by TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, have travelled to Paris today to kick off their teaching activities.

This is the fourth edition of the scholarship program, developed in partnership with the Embassy of France in Mozambique and aligned with the policies of the Mozambican Government.

The scholarships were given following a rigorous selection process that took into account a range of criteria, including academic excellence, gender diversity, provincial origin and the candidates’ background. Over the last four years this program has provided a total of 94 scholarships, with the aim of contributing to the education and development of young talents in Mozambique.

For this year’s edition, from the 1,643 candidates from across the country, 26 young people were selected, in collaboration with the French Embassy – of which 12 are women. This group of students will attend some of the most renowned university institutions in France, covering Bachelor Universitaire de Technologie and master’s levels.

Elsa Bernardoff, Cooperation Attaché at the French Embassy in Mozambique, said that “The Embassy of France is fully committed to university cooperation in Mozambique, through training initiatives for trainers and support for the exchange of scientific knowledge. This “study in France” mobility program is complementary to the rest of our activities, as it reinforces the skills of young students who, upon their return, wish to contribute to the development of their country. For our embassy, the fundamental issue is the employability. We are very proud to see our fellows return over the years, starting careers as engineers, teachers or even entrepreneurs. They return to Mozambique with skills that are scarce in the local job market, as well as with perfect fluency in French. Some find work in Maputo, but more and more decide to return to their home province, which is why we make a point of identifying a diversity of profiles from the selection phase onwards. This year, 7 provinces are represented among the selected. If we had one message to convey to future candidates for the scholarship program, it would be the following: whatever your geographic or social origins, try your luck!”

In turn, Laila Chilemba, Vice-President of Communication and Public Affairs at TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, said: “It is with great satisfaction that for the fourth consecutive year, the Mozambique LNG Project witnesses the departure of these young students to France. With the 26 students now leaving for Paris, we have reached a total of 94 scholarship recipients to date. In the year in which TotalEnergies celebrates its centenary, we have exceeded initial expectations and will reach, in the coming months, the milestone of 100 scholarships granted through the program by sending 6 more students to continue their studies abroad. This milestone is a testament to our commitment to prepare for the future, contributing to excellent education and training of qualified personnel that will contribute to drive the development of Mozambique.”

Ana Mapfala, from Sofala, who integrate the bachelor’s degree in chemical and process engineering, said that “one of the aspects that caught my attention in this course is that I will have more access to the practical part and thus combine it with theoretical knowledge. I believe that throughout the training, project ideas will emerge to solve problems within our community.”

Humberto Cintura, who comes from Nampula and will take part in the master’s degree in automotive engineering for sustainable mobility, stated that “I have always had this passion for cars, and I believe that in France I will have the opportunity to enrich my knowledge so that one day I can be part of an assembly company of automobiles. I hope this scholarship program continues for more years and reaches more young Mozambicans.”
