Vocational training for young people kicks off in Cabo Delgado

Under the Memorandum of Understanding recently signed between the Secretary of State for Youth and Employment (SEJE), through the Alberto Cassimo Vocational Training and Labour Studies Institute (IFPELAC), and TotalEnergies EP Mozambique Area 1 Limitada, operator of the Mozambique LNG project, the training of the first 120 youths out of a total of 2,500 that are intended to be trained by the end of the programme, in Cabo Delgado, started today at the IFPELAC, Pemba Branch.

Of the 120 young people now being trained, 48 are displaced people from Palma, 48 from Mocímboa da Praia and 24 from the city of Pemba, who came from families who receive displaced people. In this first group, gender parity was ensured.

The first courses, which will last from three to six months, aim to train electricians, carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers, painters and welders.

The Director General of IFPELAC, Leo Elias Jamal, said: “We are happy to start these vocational courses, which cover our young people of Pemba, but also displaced young people from Mocímboa da Praia and Palma, who were forced to leave their areas of origin due to the terrorist attacks. We, the Mozambican Government, hope that these trainings will enable our young people to quickly access the labour market wherever opportunities present themselves, whether in terms of self-employment or insertion in institutions or companies. We want to feel this connection, young people trained in our Training Centres and the productive sector satisfied”.

In his turn, Leonardo Nhavoto, TotalEnergies’ Local Content Manager, stated: “We want to contribute to the sustainable development of Mozambique. These trainings are part of our CapacitaMoz initiative that aims, among others, to contribute to the training and inclusion of young Mozambicans in the labour market. We want to contribute to train young people not only for the Mozambique LNG project, but also for other projects and areas, equally important for the development of the country, in general, and Cabo Delgado, in particular.”

Atija Jamaldine, student in the electricity course, said, “I have always liked electricity, I want to learn, so I want to make good use of this opportunity. If conditions allow, when I finish the course I would like to return to Mocímboa da Praia, from where I left because of the security situation”.

In his turn, Castelino Macassar, carpentry student, said: “This course will be very useful for me. After finishing the course, I would like to return to Palma, to work there, in a company.”

It should be noted that at the end of the training, all young people who successfully complete the programme will benefit from a toolkit to ensure a basis for self-employment. Additionally, the best students will also benefit from training in the design and implementation of business projects, which will include the financing and follow-up component to support their sustainable start.

IFPELAC is a public institution that provides vocational training and labour studies, established in 2016, and supervised by the Secretary of State for Youth and Employment.

IFPELAC develops its activities throughout the national territory, through 11 Provincial Delegations, 25 Vocational Training Centers and 28 Mobile Professional Training Units. It has a total training capacity of 25,000 trainees per year.
